Family Matters

Ratings: PG - NC-17. Please heed chapter ratings
Category: AU - Follows the Rabid Tiger story arc.
Pairing(s): Cloud/Reno, Tifa/Barret, Aeris/Tseng, Zack/Sephiroth, Vincent/Cid, Reeve/Rufus
Series Warnings: Mpre. Yeah. Like that's a shocker
Series Summary: Vincent and Cid find out more about Cid's family and Vincent's biology. Everyone finds out something about Yuffie, and Zack finds out what happens when you make his boyfriend so high he's in orbit.
Series Notes: Slashy implications aside, (don’t throw things, we’ll get back to it!) there are two things I have noticed about FFVII, Dirge of Cerberus, and Advent Children.

1) Cid, much as we love him, is an asshole
2) he and Vincent appear to be friends.

There are lots of little indicators scattered throughout the games and film. In FFVII, in the Ghost Hotel before Aeris shows up in Cloud’s room and drags him off on their ‘date’ (I always have him act as badly as possible in the play so she gets fed up and clobbers him) Vincent says to Cid (paraphrased) “Let’s go up to our room.” In DoC, Cid pats Vincent on the shoulder and says they should go out for a beer some time, like they did in the old days. There are other indicators as well, but the point is Cid and Vincent appear to actively seek out each other’s company. (Yes and we all know why but let’s try to pretend for the moment that Square Enix IS right and they are NOT making like bunnies in the storage closet.) My personal thought is that Vincent is an extremely good listener, and Cid is a man with a lot of demons to vent.

Which gets me back to Cid being an asshole. He is. He was absolutely vicious to Shera after her actions resulted in him losing his chance to go into space, he purposely baited Yuffie with sexist remarks, and the expression in his eyes is not the look of a man who spends a lot of time thinking about bunnies and puppies. He’s a bastard. He’s comfortable with it. He has his own suit of armour that keeps everyone at arm’s length, and the only person he appears to have formed a one-on-one friendship with is the guy who never opens his mouth. He does have a sweet side. He named his ship after his wife. When Cloud was ill with mako poisoning, he thought of him and wanted to go see him. In DoC he clearly cared about the lives of the WRO soldiers. But a sensitive new age guy he is not. And he does have a wide streak of arrogance and perfectionism in him. This to me speaks of a man who has a lot to prove, and likely was treated pretty poorly as a child. Everything he has, he made with his own two hands, and people whom he perceives as having messed with him are better off staying out of his way.

And thus we have the foundation for this particular series…
