Monshikka sighed in exasperation as he came into the room. Hair tied up in a tail, dressed in a set of clothing more suited to the Mountain Cabin than White Palace, he looked around to assess the damage. There were feathers everywhere; on the floor, on the furniture, floating in the air. Sixteen little peeping half-dragonhawk hatchlings in thick leather nappies ran hither and yon catching the falling feathers in tiny fists, snapping at them with small snouts lined with small, needlelike baby teeth. A chair lay overturned, one leg missing. Foliage lay on the floor around one of the potted plants, though not quite enough to make up for what was missing. "Stop!" he called. Instantly, the little ones stopped. Sixteen pairs of shining eyes blinked up at him. He looked to his unlikely offspring. "Were you jumping on the bed again?" One of the little ones stepped forward, dragging tiny wings. "Squeak!" it said. "What do you mean 'no'?" Monshikka said. He pointed to the item in question. The blankets were in ruins, the mattress shredded -- the source of the feathers. Claw marks marred the carved wood posts. "Look at it!"
"Squeak! Squeak!" "Well, if it wasn't you, who was it?" "Squeeeeeak!" "Oh, really?" Monshikka looked to the named hatchling, who was trying to hide behind its siblings. Uselessly, as it turned out; the little one was as white as Monshikka. "What have I told you about that? Not in dragonhawk form! Honestly, Likka, this is the fourth time this week!" "SquEEk!" "You know it is." A hard sigh. "That's it. No flying lessons for a week." The room was instantly filled with distressed peeping. "Quiet! Or I'll make it two!" Silence. "Now, who ate the plant? And the chair?" It took almost half-an-hour to get the details sorted out. Sheesh. That was the last time he went to use the water closet without leaving a nanny behind...
